Disable Terminal Bell Windows Git Bash
Disabling the Terminal Bell in the Windows version of Git Bash turned out to be a bit of a pain. Especially if you're like me, and you're going to immediately look at it from a UNIX perspective. How naive I was?
In reality, Windows is the one controlling that bell/beep you hear every time you attempt a premature tab complete. I figured this out after taking a look into my volume mixer.
The middle channel was the only one fluctuating . This was when I had my eureka moment. It was at this point that after a quick Google search, I landed on this page: https://support2.microfocus.com/techdocs/1048.html.
With a quick bit of assumption about their somewhat deprecated instructions, I was able to piece it together. Finally, here you go:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Hardware and Sound.
- Select Sound.
- Move to Sounds Tab.
- Move to "Default Beep" within the Program Events box.
- Highlight it by clicking, and select the Sounds dropdown.
- Select (none).
- Press OK.
Initially, my solution was to try changing my non-existent .bashrc. After some playing with that, .bash_profile, and .profile, I changed my strategy to a Windows geared solution. My initial workaround had been attempting to use the Sound Mixer with the idea that it would have VSCode or Git Bash as an option. When it didn't, I moved on. I should have tested where the actual sound was coming from, and I wouldn't have been perplexed as long.
I'm writing this because I've yet to see a solid explanation of this exact issue on Stack Overflow or within another blogspot, other than the manual I linked which is not referencing Windows 10. I hope this was helpful and if you're like me, and suspect you suffer from misophonia, I hope it comes as a help.
Happy Bug Hunting,

add "set bell-style none" to /etc/inputrc is simpler, at least you avoid the Winbrol clickodrome.
ReplyDeleteThis worked!
Deleteyou method is too radiacal because no more sound will output for other kinds of notifications. Just right click on the git-bash icon (at the top left of the git-bash window), then click "options", select the "terminal" menu and set sound to "none".
